Admission to MBBS in India – Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) is one of India’s most prominent and sought-after courses. Candidates become qualified doctors after completing an MBBS degree. MBBS is a difficult course to complete since students are tested at every step along the way. Candidates who aspire to be doctors should be aware of the MBBS admission process in India. Every year, thousands of students aspire and attempt to become doctors. However, only a handful of them gets selected for MBBS programs in India. Getting into an MBBS program is quite competitive. Every year, over 15 lakh candidates fight for only 89,395 MBBS seats approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC). Qualifying for the NEET is the first hurdle for individuals seeking MBBS admission.
The NEET test is held once a year by the National Testing Agency (NTA). NEET-UG is the only national-level entrance examination in India for MBBS admission as per the Supreme Court of India. The NEET exam also grants admission to 1,899 MBBS seats in AIIMS colleges and 249 places in JIPMER. Based on NEET results, 542 medical colleges, 15 AIIMS, and 2 JIPMER institutes offer MBBS admission. When MBBS seats are compared to the number of hopefuls that take the exam, the battle for MBBS admission in India is becoming increasingly fierce.
The NTA’s MBBS admissions screening process is quite severe and solely dependent on NEET exam merit. The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) oversees the MBBS admission process once the NEET results are announced. MCC admits 15 percent of the All India Quota, deemed/central universities, the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), and Employee State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) colleges to the MBBS program. The counseling authorities of each state provide MBBS admission to the remaining 85 percent of state quota seats.
MBBS Eligibility Criteria
The National Medical Commission (NMC) in India sets the requirements for admission to MBBS. For MBBS admission, only candidates who meet the eligibility standards are considered. - Academic qualifications: Candidates must have passed class 12 from a recognized board to be considered for MBBS admission in India.
- Subjects studied: Students must require to study Physics, Chemistry, and Biology in grades 11 and 12 to be eligible for an MBBS program.
- Minimum marks required: Candidates must obtain a minimum of 50% in the qualifying examination to be considered for MBBS admission in India. The minimum marks required for the SC, ST, and OBC categories for admission to MBBS is 40%.
- Age: To be admitted to MBBS in India, applicants must be at least 17 years old. The maximum age for MBBS admission is 25 years old.
MBBS entrance exams
As previously stated, there is just one all-India medical entrance exam – NEET – for MBBS admission. The NTA administers the medical entrance exam, which is based on the NEET-UG syllabus, which covers topics from CBSE classes 11 and 12. According to the NEET exam format, MBBS applicants must complete 180 multiple choice questions out of 200 in three hours.
Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (Botany + Zoology) are the three areas of the NEET 2022 question paper. The NEET biology portion holds the most weight, with 90 questions to answer for a total of 360 points. The remaining two sections of the NEET exam are weighted equally, with 45 questions and 180 points each.
Candidates must pass the NTA NEET cutoff to be considered for MBBS admission in India. The NEET cut-off for MBBS admission is the 50th percentile for general category students. The NEET cut-off for reserved category candidates is the 40th percentile. Candidates who meet the NEET cutoff marks and percentile are eligible for further MBBS admission counseling. NEET results and cutoffs are used to determine admission to AIIMS, JIPMER, and medical colleges.
What after qualifying NEET exam?
Candidates who pass the NEET exam will be able to participate in the AQI counseling procedure for MBBS admission at the national and state levels. The National Testing Agency will compile a list of NEET-UG-qualified candidates. Students who are shortlisted will be eligible for NEET counseling. Students must register at the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) portal to participate in counseling and seat allocation.
NEET counseling will be conducted by MCC for 15% of the All India Quota, deemed/central universities/AFMS, and ESIC colleges. Students must register using their personal and NEET-related information, pay the counseling fee, and fill out their preferences for the course and colleges they desire to study during MBBS admission counseling. MCC will perform NEET UG seat allotment based on candidate choices, NEET All India Rank, reservation, and seat matrix. Candidates who are offered seats during MBBS admission seat allotment must report to the institute to which they have been assigned.
